St. Alfred the Great

"I desire to leave to the men that shall come after me a remembrance of me in good works."
- St. Alfred the Great (849 - 899)

Today is the feast day of St. Alfred the Great. Alfred was born in 849 to the fifth son of the king of Wessex, England. In 853, on a trip to Rome, Pope Leo IV accepted Alfred as his godson. Alfred was pious and a great scholar, and seemed to of been made for the religious life. However, Alfred became the king of Wessex, and was forced to fight the Danes, who were trying to invade England, during most of his reign. He was a patron of the arts, literature, and the Church.

St. Alfred the Great, pray for us!
