St. Francis Borgia

"Everyone--whether kings, nobles, tradesmen, or peasants--must do all things for the glory of God and under the inspiration of Christ's example..."
- St. Francis Borgia (1510 - 1572)

Today is the feast day of St. Francis Borgia. St. Francis was born in Spain in 1510, and grew up to be a young nobleman and served in the King of Spain's royal court. Throughout his life, he was a Christian gentleman and it is said that his greatest joy was to receive Holy Communion. After his wife Eleanor passed away, Francis decided to became a Jesuit priest. He gave up his title as Duke and gave it to his son Charles. After a time, he became the superior general of the Jesuits and helped the Jesuit order to grow and spread throughout Europe and the New World (Americas). He helped found missions in what is now Florida, Mexico, and Peru. He died in 1572, and is honored with the title of being the second founder of the Jesuits. He was canonized in 1672, and is the patron saint against earthquakes, of Portugal, and of Rota, Marianas.

St. Francis Borgia, pray for us!
