St. Gerard Majella

"Consider the shortness of time, the length of eternity and reflect how everything here below comes to an end and passes by. Of what use is it to lean on that which cannot give support?"
- St. Gerard Majella (1726 - 1755)

Today is the feast day of St. Gerard Majella. Gerard was born in Muro, Italy, in 1726. He joined the Redemptorists (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer) in 1749, and became a professed lay brother in 1752. He was very pious, loving, humble, wise, obedient, and pure. St. Alphonsus Ligouri even remarked that "Brother Gerard is a saint". He had many great gifts bestowed on him by the Lord such as bilocation, prophecy, reading people's hearts, levitation, ecstasies, etc. He even predicted the date and time of his death. In 1755, Gerard died from tuberculosis at the age of twenty-nine. He is the patron saint of expectant mothers, and is known under this title because of a miracle worked by his prayers for a woman in labor.

St. Gerard Majella, pray for us!
