Pope St. Damasus I

"Be ever engaged, so that whenever the devil calls he may find you occupied."
- St. Jerome (347 - 420)

Today is the feast day of Pope St. Damasus I. Pope Damasus was born in 306. He was a sixty-year-old deacon when he was elected pope. During his reign, an anti-pope was set up and much fighting occurred because both sides were trying to enforce their beliefs. When he was pope, he commissioned St. Jerome to translate the Scriptures into Latin, changed the language of the liturgy from Greek to Latin, and worked to preserve the catacombs and other holy relics. He is also known for the epigrams he wrote on the martyrs and saints. He died in 384.

Pope St. Damasus I, pray for us!

  1. We thank God for the gift of such a noble Saint. Even in the presence of challenges and rivalry he worked to advance the reign of God's kingdom on earth. His is to be remembered for all ages. Blessed be God
