St. Lucy

"No one's body is polluted so as to endanger the soul if it has not pleased the mind. If you were to lift my hand to your idol and so make me offer against my will, I would still be guiltless in the sight of the true God, who judges according to the will and knows all things. If now, against my will, you cause me to be polluted, a twofold purity will be gloriously imputed to me. You cannot bend my will to your purpose; whatever you do to my body, that cannot happen to me."
- St. Lucy (d. 304)

Today is the feast of St. Lucy. Not much is known of Lucy besides the fact that she lived in Sicily (also known as Syracuse) during the 3rd and 4th centuries, and that was a Christian during the persecutions of Diocletian. It is said that she made a vow of virginity, and the man that she was supposed to marry turned her over to the governor. When guards came to get her, they found that she was very heavy and could not move her. They then killed her. There is another legend connected to the eyes Lucy often holds on a dish in pictures. This legend says that Diocletian ordered that Lucy's eyes be put out as a part of her torture, but that God miraculously restored her eyes to her. She is said to of died in 304, and is the patron saint of the blind and those with eye-trouble.

St. Lucy, pray for us!
