Feast of The Most Holy Name of Jesus

"The sweet Name of Jesus produces in us holy thoughts, fills the soul with noble sentiments, strengthens virtue, begets good works, and nourishes pure affection. All spiritual food leaves the soul dry, if it contain not that penetrating oil, the Name Jesus."
- St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 - 1153)

Today is the feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Though the Holy Name of Jesus is mentioned in Philipians by St. Paul, this devotion became popular largely due to 12th century Cistercian monks and nuns, and also through the preaching of St. Bernardine of Siena in the 15th century. This devotion became even more popular when the Jesuits began to promote it in the 16th century. In 1721, Innocent XIII extended the feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus to the entire Church.

Jesus, have mercy on us!
