Saint Josef Bilczewski

"What does the poor man do at the rich man's door, the sick man in the presence of his physician, the thirsty man at a limpid stream? What they do, I do before the Eucharistic God. I pray. I adore. I love."
-Saint Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226)

Today is the feast day of Saint Josef Bilczewski. Josef was born in Wilamowice, Poland, in 1860. At the age of twenty, he entered the seminary at Krakow and was ordained a priest four years later. Josef was a professor at both Jan Casimir University in Krakow and Jagiellonian University at Lviv. In 1900, Josef became the archbishop of Lviv (also known as Leopoli), Ukraine. He was known for his goodness of heart, understanding, humility, piety, commitment to hard work, and pastoral zeal. Josef was also known for intervening with government authorities so as to protect and defend the rights of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. He strived to protect everyone in his diocese regardless of their race or religion. He died on March 20, 1923, and was canonized in 2005.

Saint Josef Bilczewski, pray for us!
