- Saint Ephraem of Syria (d. 373)
Today is the feast day of Blessed Caesar de Bus. Caesar was born in Cavaillon, France, in 1544. At the age of 18, he entered the French army. However, after seeing the realities of battle and the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre firsthand, he fell ill and started reviewing his priorities. When he recovered from his illness, Caesar decided to become a priest. He was ordained in 1582, and undertook the work of teaching the catechism to those who lived in neglected and rural places. His efforts were well-received. Caesar also worked with his cousin to form a program of family catechesis. The goal of the program was to stop heresy among the people, and the local bishops approved of it. The Fathers of Christian Doctrine was a religious order that grew out of Caesar's efforts. Caesar also wrote a book called Instructions for the Family on the Four Parts of the Roman Catechism, which was published 60 years after his death. He died in 1607, and was beatified in 1975.
Blessed Caesar de Bus, pray for us!
