Saint Hugh of Grenoble

"We can only learn to know ourselves and do what we can - namely, surrender our will and fulfill God's will in us."
 - Saint Teresa of Avila (1515 - 1582)

Today is the feast day of Saint Hugh of Grenoble. Hugh was born around 1052 in France. In 1080, Hugh was appointed to be the bishop of Grenoble. Before that, he was the canon at the cathedral in Valence. Hugh attempted a massive reform on his new diocese of Grenoble, but became discouraged and entered  a Benedictine monastery after a year or two. However, Pope Saint Gregory VII ordered him back to Grenoble, and he once again began the work of reform in diocese. He was a fearless defender of the Church, and was also an eloquent preacher. He restored his own cathedral, and even helped make civic improvements in Grenoble. He also gave the land to Saint Bruno on which the Grande Chartreuse, the motherhouse of the Carthusian Order, was built. He is well known as the patron and benefactor of Saint Bruno.  He served as a bishop in France for 52 years. Hugh died in 1132, and was canonized in 1134.

Saint Hugh, pray for us!
