Today is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This feast was originally celebrated in the East under the title of the Conception of Mary during the seventh century. The feast was celebrated in the West in the eighth century. In the eighteenth century, the feast of the Immaculate Conception became a feast of the universal Church. It is celebrated as a solemnity today.
