"Suffering is a great grace; through suffering the soul becomes like the Savior; in suffering love becomes crystallized; the greater the suffering, the purer the love."
- St. Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament (1905 - 1938)
Today is the feast day of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament (also known just as St. Faustina). She was born in Lodz, Poland in 1905. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925, where she served as a cook, porter, and gardener (not all at the same time though). She was very pious and received messages, which are recorded in her diary Divine Mercy in My Soul, from Jesus Christ throughout her life in the convent, including the messages about Divine Mercy. She was called to be the apostle and secretary of Divine Mercy for the Lord, and carried out as best she could the requests of Our Lord for the institution of Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter Sunday) and that of the painting of the Divine Mercy Image. She died on October 5, 1938, when she was 33, in Krakow, Poland and was canonized in 2000.
St. Faustina, pray for us!
