St. Dominic of Silos

"Nothing seems tiresome or painful when you are working for a Master who pays well; who rewards even a cup of cold water given for love of Him."
- St. Dominic Savio (1842 - 1857)

Today is the feast day of St. Dominic of Silos. Dominic was born in 1000 in Canas, Navarre, Spain. He became a Benedictine priest and eventually became abbott of the monastery he had entered. However, he and two other monks were exiled when he refused to give King Garcia III of Navarre part of the monastery lands. He then went to King Ferdinand I of Castile and Leon and he was made abbott of St. Sebastian Abbey (now called St. Dominic's) at Silos. He then reformed the abbey and started a  scriptorium which became famous in the region. He also rescued Christian slaves from the Moors. It is also said that Bl. Joan of Aza came to St. Dominic of Silos' shrine and asked for a child to be born to her. St. Dominic is said to of appeared to her and reassured her that she would have a child. This child grew up to be St. Dominic de Guzman, the founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Dominic of Silos died in 1073.

St. Dominic of Silos, pray for us!
