St. Peter Canisius

"If you have too much to do, with God's help you will find time to do it all."
- St. Peter Canisius (1521 - 1597)

Today is the feast day of St. Peter Canisius. Peter was born in 1521 in the Netherlands. At the age of 19, he received his master's degree from the University of Cologne, and joined the Jesuits soon after. In 1546, Peter was ordained a priest, and became known for his writings on St. Cyril of Alexandria and St. Leo the Great. In 1547, he attended several sessions of the Council of Trent, and afterwards became entrusted with implementing these things in Germany. He taught in many universities and also helped establish several seminaries and universities. He wrote a catechism for the common people, and was an eloquent preacher. When he was 70 years old, he suffered a paralytic seizure, but continued to write and preach with the help of his secretary until his death on December 21, 1597.

St. Peter Canisius, pray for us!
