Saint Claude de la Colombiere

"To prefer man to God: A strange and unhappy slavery is that of a man who seeks to please other men. I vow never to do anything nor to leave anything undone because of what people think. This will set up in me a great interior peace."
- Saint Claude de la Colombiere (1641 - 1682)

Today is the feast day of Saint Claude de la Colombiere. Claude was born in 1641 in Paray-le-Monial, France. He was the confessor of Saint Margaret Mary, and was a great promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After being Saint Margaret Mary's confessor for a time, Claude was sent to England to be the confessor of the duchess of York. He converted many people by his eloquent preaching and holy life. However, Claude and other Catholics were rumored to be in a plot against the king of England, and so he was imprisoned and eventually banished. He died in 1682.

Saint Claude de la Colombiere, pray for us!
