Saint Colette

"We must faithfully keep what we have promised. If through human weakness we fail, we must always without delay arise again by means of holy penance, and give our attention to leading a good life and to dying a holy death. May the Father of all mercy, the Son by His holy passion, and the Holy Spirit, source of peace, sweetness and love, fill us with Their consolation. Amen."
- Saint Colette (1380 - 1447)

Today is the feast day of Saint Colette. Colette was born Nicolette DeBoilet on January 13, 1380, at Corby Abbey in Picardy, France. She was orphaned at 17, and distributed her inheritance to the poor. She then became a Franciscan tertiary and lived as a solitary at Corby Abbey. In 1406, Colette had a dream which told her to reform the Poor Clares. She received the Poor Clares habit from Peter de Luna (who was then recognized as pope by the French people and was called Benedict XIII). When she received the habit, she was given orders to reform the order and was appointed as the superior of all the convents she would reform. Despite resistance, Colette was able to found seventeen convents with a reformed rule and also reformed several older convents. Colette was also known for her great sanctity, and ecstasies and visions of the Passion. She also predicted her own death. Colette died in 1447 in Ghent, Belgium, and was canonized in 1807.

Saint Colette, pray for us!
