Saints Perpetua & Felicity

"We were in the hands of our persecutors, when my father, out of the affection he bore me, made new efforts to shake my resolution. I said to him: 'Can that vessel, which you see, change its name?' He said: 'No.' I replied: 'Nor can I call myself any other than I am, that is to say, a Christian.'"
- Saint Perpetua (d. 203)

Today is the feast day of Saints Perpetua and Felicity. Perpetua was a young, high-spirited, and well-educated Carthaginian (part of North Africa) mother who was arrested for being a Christian. Felicity was a young Carthaginian slave, who was eight months pregnant when she was arrested for being Christian.  Perpetua and Felicity were arrested along with three other Christians who refused to renounce their faith, and were sent to the public games in the amphitheater. Perpetua and Felicity were beheaded and the others were killed by beasts. Before being killed, Perpetua was able to say goodbye to her little son, and Felicity gave birth to a baby girl. More can be read about Perpetua and Felicity in the account written by Perpetua herself about her time in jail before the games, which is called "The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity."

Saints Perpetua and Felicity, pray for us!
