Saint Matilda

Today is the feast day of Saint Matilda. Matilda was the daughter of Count Dietrich of Westphalia and Reinhild of Denmark. She was raised by her grandmother who was the Abbess of Eufurt covent. Matilda married Henry the Fowler, who was the son of Duke Otto of Saxony, in 909. In 912, Henry succeeded his father as duke, and became king in 919. Matilda was known for her great piety and charitable works. She gave much to the poor. She built three convents and a monastery during her lifetime, and often lived in the convent she had built at Nordhausen in her later years. On March 14, 968, Matilda died in the monastery at Quedlinburg.
