Blessed Agnello of Pisa

"We are to love God for Himself, because of a twofold reason; nothing is more reasonable, nothing more profitable."
- Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 - 1153)

Today is the feast day of Blessed Agnello of Pisa. Agnello was a Franciscan who was admitted into the Franciscan Order by St. Francis himself. St. Francis also appointed Blessed Agnello to found an English province when he was only a deacon. Eight other friars accompanied Blessed Agnello on his journey to England. The friars went from Canterbury, to London, and then to Oxford. Everywhere the friars went they were received with enthusiasm. Agnello died at the age of 41 in Oxford, England, because of dysentery. He had been in England only 11 years. Agnello's zeal for poverty was great, and his fellow friars respected him because of his great sanctity and prudence.

Blessed Agnello of Pisa, pray for us!
