Saint Isidore of Seville

"The more you devote yourself to study of the sacred utterances, the richer be your understanding of them, just as the more soil is tilled, the richer the harvest.
The man who is slow to grasp things but who really tries hard is rewarded, equally he who does not cultivate his God-given intellectual ability is condemned for despising his gifts and sinning by sloth."
- Saint Isidore of Seville (560 - 636)

Today is the feast day of Saint Isidore of Seville. Isidore was born around 560 in Cartagena, Spain. His two brothers and sister (Leander, Fulgentius, and Florentina) are also saints. Isidore was educated by his brother Leander. Despite the fact that Leander was rather abusive while teaching him, Isidore loved to learn. Later in his life, he would succeed his brother Leander as the bishop of Seville. During his time as bishop, he encouraged the establishment of a seminary in all the dioceses throughout Spain and that every branch of knowledge should be taught in the seminaries. He also wrote many books during his lifetime on various subjects, and some were even used as textbooks for years. Isidore is now known as one of the greatest teachers in Spain, and is also a Doctor of the Church. During his life, he helped convert many Arian Visigoths to Catholicism, and was a most generous benefactor of the poor. Isidore died in 636, and is the patron saint of computers and the internet.

Saint Isidore of Seville, pray for us!
