Our Lady of Guadalupe

"Let nothing discourage you, nothing depress you. Am I not here who am your mother? Are you not in the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else you need?"
- Our Lady of Guadalupe

Today is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On December 9, 1531, Our Lady appeared to a 57-year-old widowed Aztec Indian who was named Juan Diego (his name after baptism) in a small village outside of Mexico City. Juan was on his way to Mass, and was walking by a hill called Tepeyac, when he heard beautiful music that sounded like the warbling of birds. He then saw a radiant cloud and in it a maiden that look like an Aztec princess. She talked to Juan in his native language and told him to go to the bishop of Mexico and ask him to build a chapel where she had appeared. The bishop asked Juan to have the lady give him a sign. Juan's uncle became ill about this time, and this led Juan to avoid going to see the lady. On December 12, however, Mary found Juan and told him that his uncle would recover. At this time, she also gave Juan the sign the bishop had asked for. Our Lady gave Juan roses to put in his tilma to carry to the bishop. When Juan opened his tilma before the bishop, the roses fell out and on Juan's tilma was a beautiful image of Our Lady as she had appeared to Juan.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!
