Pope St. Damasus I

Today is the feast day of Pope St. Damasus I. Pope Damasus was born in 306. He was a sixty-year-old deacon when he was elected pope. During his reign, an anti-pope was set up and much fighting occurred because both sides were trying to enforce their beliefs. When he was pope, he commissioned St. Jerome to translate the Scriptures into Latin, changed the language of the liturgy from Greek to Latin, and worked to preserve the catacombs and other holy relics. He is also known for the epigrams he wrote on the martyrs and saints. He died in 384.
