St. Paul the Hermit

"All the science of the Saints is included in these two things: To do, and to suffer. And whoever had done these two things best, has made himself most saintly."
- St. Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622)

Today is the feast day of St. Paul the Hermit. Paul was born in the 3rd century in Egypt. By the age of 15, he was already an orphan. During the persecution of Decius, Paul had to hide in the home of a friend. However, he soon fled to the desert in fear that his brother-in-law may hand him over to the persecutors. He planned to return once the persecution had ended, but decided otherwise because of his love of solitude and heavenly contemplation. For drink, he went to a nearby spring, and a palm tree served as both clothing and nourishment. After 21 years, a bird would bring him half a loaf of bread daily. Paul is said to of lived in the desert for 90 years, and died when he was about 112.

St. Paul, pray for us!
